Research interests:

1) Sustainability Accounting (How best can a manager be strategic to profitably counter externalities that affect the business operations both in the short and long run by prudently applying accounting discretions? This is the core of sustainability accounting). Technically, this is integrated reporting now fully embraced by International Financial Reporting Standard under Integrated Reporting Framework with IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 and supported by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB).

2) Forensic Accounting. In the wake of corruption everywhere and anywhere, it is right to say that these stem from fraud and financial crimes. Forensic accounting is the solution.

3) Accounting dynamics in agriculture of small holder farmers and individuals

 

Biography

Sylvester Onyango is an Assistant Lecturer at Karatina University. He continues to rise in the ranks of academics, where he began his journey as a Graduate Assistant having been absorbed by the Karatina University having attained a first class honors in Bachelor of Business Management (Accounting Option). He successfully pursued his Masters Degree in Business Management (Accounting Option) of Karatina University where he was elevated to the position of Tutorial Fellow. Sylvester is currently pursuing his PhD in Business Administration (Accounting Specialization) at University of Embu. His accounting specialization area is Management Accounting with biasness in strategic management accounting in which he is keen to delve in matters sustainability accounting in the wake of accountants’ role in combating climate change and still generate above optimal profits. This befits the organizational goals as well as cooperating all stakeholder interests. Do we care for the environment and social set up from where we draw economic resources to generate operational profits? Can you match planet, people and profits? His research publications has majorly been in sustainability accounting and was awarded research grants by National Research Fund (NRF) Kenya for his Masters studies on “influence of non-conventional reporting on sustainability accounting in the tea sector in mount Kenya region”

Sylvester has undergone vigorous training towards being developed as an astute researcher and a trainer. He has been and continues to be coopted in University research activities by renowned professors. He has participated in four major research, as a research assistant, namely:  Baseline Survey on Tea Value Addition in 2014; National Biosafety Authority in 2014; Laikipia County Training Needs Assessment in 2015/2016; Karatina University Alumni Tracer Study in 2019. He has attended four conferences and presented papers which so far have been peer reviewed. He has successfully supervised eight undergraduate research work at the level of Tutorial Fellow. He has taken part in curriculum review and development in business related fields and mentored students towards career development. He is keen on personal financial management by not only the students but also individuals. His question is: how well can you spread your income to complete a cycle?

Sylvester has participated in organizing conference on climate change in 2023 and he is currently a member of Karatina University Career Organizing Committee, School of Business Conference Organizing Committee and the Vice Chairperson of Karatina University Alumni Association
